Gem scratched so easily when trying to see if it fit a gold ring I have. Tanzanite and garnet have a hardness of around 6.5, which makes them relatively soft gemstones and susceptible to scratching or damage if handled improperly. It is recommended to have a PROFESSIONAL JEWELER set your stones rather than attempting to fit or set them yourself. Unfortunately, damage caused while attempting to fit a loose gemstone into an existing setting is not indicative of the quality of the stone.
